Adjacent Spaces
“On my shelf are piles of CDs by clarinetists. Quite a few of them are these typical solo recitals, which are mainly about showing off in great virtuosic compositions by playing as many notes as quickly and elegantly as possible. But that’s exactly what I don’t want,” says the Belgian clarinetist Dries Tack. His solo album Adjacent Spaces unites six compositions in which the clarinet deliberately does not appear as an artfully played melodic instrument in the service of a beautiful orchestral sound. Instead, it is moved as far away as possible from its familiar tonal appearance. The most diverse playing techniques are used, but not the conventional ones.
